The NGO ‘Goa First’ on Wednesday filed a complaint with Mormugao Deputy Collector Sachin Desai claiming that the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) had not taken any safety measures during ongoing renovation work of its administrative building.
Accusing the MMC of failing to display a board with valid approvals, the Goa First also stated that the MMC had not fenced the area of the building which has been taken up for renovation work.
Goa First also insisted that the renovation work should not go on till all government offices in the building are shifted, as the work could endanger lives.
Speaking to reporters, Goa First Convenor Parshuaram Sonurlekar said the roof work of the MMC building has been taken up while government departments like the Urban Health Centre, where small babies are being administered polio doses, the civil supplies department and the post office are fully functional.
“The work must be stopped till safety measures are adopted, the area is fenced and a board detailing the work is put. Besides, government offices at the basement of the building must shifted so that there is no chance of endangering life getting hurt during the renovation work,’ said Sonurlekar.
“These safety measures are vital since government offices in the MMC building are frequently visited places and many people may be unaware that renovation work is being carried out on the roof of the building.”
“Construction material from the roof can accidentally fall on people entering or exiting these offices. Authorities must also appoint guards to stop people from entering government offices from the MMC entry points where works are being undertaken," said Sonurlekar.
