The three villages include Keri in Sattari taluka and Priol and Madkai in Ponda taluka.MHRD has conceptualised this scheme with an aim to connect institutes of higher education with local communities to address the development challenges of rural India through appropriate technological inventions.The actual implementation of the scheme is expected to start from August, this year. The NIT will provide the expertise to these three villages in two areas “ improving educational standards and proper use of IT applications, especially in the Panchayat Enterprise Suite for the governance of gram panchayats covering a host of applications, NREGA and so on, with efforts to bridge the digital divide.The UBA programme activities are expected to be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, it has been planned to take up activities which can improve the teaching-learning process at different schools under the premise of Priol village panchayat; while in the second phase, community development activities like water shed management, cashew nut crop and other agricultural activities which will help majority of the people will be taken up.NIT has already constituted the UBA Cell under the leadership of NIT Director Dr G R C Reddy, with dean (academics), dean (student affairs), heads of departments (HoDs) and sports officer as its members.
As per the scheme, the preference has been given to backward panchayats using indicators like MGNREGS households, SC and ST population and agricultural labourers, among others.
