Has the State government been reluctant to set up its own District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) centre in South Goa to offer cheaper courses and programmes for students and teachers in the south?
Sources have claimed that the State government’s reluctance to open its DIET centre in South Goa has forced students from Canacona, Sanguem and Quepem to go all the way to the DIET in Porvorim, while teachers from these distant talukas are also expected to visit the Porvorim DIET centre for in-service training programmes.
“According to the Ministry of Human Resources, there should be one DIET centre in each district of the State and as such, there should have been one more DIET centre in South Goa,” said a source at the DIET centre in Porvorim.
“The SCERT had recommended one more DIET centre in South Goa, but their recommendation was turned down by the State government without assigning a reason. Instead, they have given permission to a private institution in Cortalim which is charging exorbitant fees for this two-year course.”
“Students from Canacona, Sanguem and Quepem talukas have to come all the way to Porvorim. If the government had opened one more DIET centre in South Goa, it would have benefited students from these talukas,” said the source.
The source added that teachers from South Goa have also been inconvenienced with the sole government DIET centre based in Porvorim.
“DIET is required to conduct in-service training programmes for teachers and so, teachers from Canacona, Sanguem and other remote parts of South Goa are forced to visit the Porvorim DIET to attend this programme,” the source added.
Incidentally, there are 36 DIETs centres in neighbouring Karnataka.
