No solution in sight to Sonsodo garbage, Govt tells High Court

PANAJI

The Goa government on Tuesday told the Bombay High Court at Goa that it has no solutions to offer for remediating the waste lying at the Sonsodo garbage treatment plant despite sending 20 tonnes of wet waste to the Saligao waste management plant and other waste to the South Goa treatment unit.

The matter is being pursued by the Citizens for Sonsodo through its secretary Roque Mascarenhas.

On Tuesday the South Goa Collector, who had visited the site on Monday, filed a preliminary report before the High Court. The report which was presented before the High Court estimated that around 10,000 tonnes of waste -- most of it mixed waste -- is piled up at the site -- which he said cannot be treated in its present form.

Advocate General Devidas Pangam also submitted that 27-35 tonnes wet waste was generated everyday at Margao, out of which 20 tonnes goes to Saligao waste treatment plant and 5 tonnes are treated by SGPDA waste treatment unit. But, around 7-10 tonnes of waste is piling up untreated at the site.

The Advocate General said that until the Cacora garbage treatment plant is up and running, there was no immediate solution for the problem.

The High Court has posted the matter for Wednesday.

The writ petition was filed in 2019.
