The managing committee of Calapor Comunidade has stated that they should not be held responsible over the incident involving the draining of water from Bondvoll Lake.
Addressing reporters in Santa Cruz on Tuesday, special attorney Peter Gonsalves said they are only the owners of the land.
“We have no control over the lake water as the key of the valve to release the water is with the Water Resources Department (WRD),” Gonsalves informed.
“Also, the lake having been declared as a wetland, the responsibility also lies with the Wetlands Authority,” he stated, while adding that those accusing the Comunidade of negligence are doing so without proper knowledge.
“When we came to know about the sabotage wherein the water was drained, we immediately filed a complaint with the Old Goa police who are investigating the matter,” Gonsalves said.
“There is no truth in the statement made that I was informed three months ago about the water being drained. And we cannot keep constant check on the area as it is located in the interiors,” he stated.
Comunidade President Vincent Fernandes also said they were not aware of the lake water having been drained.
“When we went to inspect about a fallen tree, we noticed that the water has been drained and we filed police complaint,” Fernandes said while stating that the present committee is unnecessarily being criticised on the issue.
Former Comunidade president Elias Dias demanded that the government should post a guard at the lake so that such incident is not repeated in the future. Treasurer Menino Araujo also spoke.
