A 45-year-old man from New Vaddem in Dabolim, who was linked to two murders about two decades ago, was found murdered in a bushy area near a bar at New Vaddem on Friday.
Locals noticed the body of Seby Patra in the bushes early Friday morning and contacted a media person from the area, who alerted the police.
Mormugao DySP Laurence D’Souza rushed to the site along with Vasco PI Nolasco Raposo and other staff from Vasco Police station and cordoned off the area and conducted the panchanama.
The police informed that Seby Patra had a notorious background and had been linked to two murder cases about 18 years back.
“The assailant dragged Patra about 15 metres from the road to the bushes, and his head was found smashed with a stone,” said the police. The body has been referred to GMC for autopsy.
“We have recovered CCTV footage where Seby is seen walking on the road in a drunken state. We have registered an offence of murder against unknown person and are further investigating the case,” added Raposo.
Police pressed dog squad into service and also took help of forensic team to get clues in the case.
Assis Patra, brother of the deceased, who rushed to the crime site, informed the police that Seby was married and his wife is employed abroad, while his in-laws at Chicalim take care of their two children.
“Seby was an alcoholic. Though he had a room at Chicalim and a flat at Dabolim, he frequently stayed at New Vaddem, but was very irregular about coming home,” said Assis.
“On Thursday at about 10 pm, I saw him near a fast food joint at New Vaddem and I thought he would come late in the night as usual,” added Assis.
A resident of New Vaddem informed the police that Seby was present for a political meeting at New Vaddem.
