On eve of no-trust against MMC chief: BJP takes no chances, moves 15 councillors to North Goa

MARGAO
Once bitten, twice shy, so goes the saying. After last week’s election fiasco wherein Goa Forward-backed Independent Ganashyam Shirodkar made it to the top post of Margao civic chief, thanks to cross voting by the BJP, the saffron party has not taken any chances this time round.

Sources in the know informed that the 15 BJP-backed councillors have all headed to North Goa after a meeting at a Margao-based hotel on Thursday morning. If a BJP-backed councillor is to be believed, they have headed to the North of Zuari river, to ensure the flock remains together at least till the no-trust motion against the MMC chairperson is carried by majority votes.

Last time round, the Goa Forward-backed councillors were all ferried to North Goa, to the north of river Mandovi and were brought together to the civic body for voting.

Sources informed that the BJP-backed councillors went into a huddle with leaders at a city hotel on Thursday morning to take stock of the situation.

While sources pointed out that the no-trust motion moved by the BJP-backed councillors may have a smooth sailing with Chairperson Ganashyam conceding defeat by putting in his papers, the BJP has another task cut out – to zero in on the consensus candidate for the post of Chairperson as and when it falls vacant.

For, there are more than one claimant for the top post and party leaders, including Congress-turned-BJP Margao MLA Digambar Kamat will have to use all his experience to forge a consensus candidate.
