At a time when the state is struggling with its waste management and has been facing flak on all sides for the same, especially after the Sonsodo debacle, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant at the Revolution Day programme at Azad Maidan, took the opportunity to make fresh promises about waste management.
Speaking about the government’s recently launched initiative ‘Green Goa, Clean Goa’ to make Goa plastic and garbage free, Sawant said that the proposed garbage treatment plants at Verna, Cacoda and other places will address the issues of medical waste, hazardous waste, bio-degradable waste, and industrial waste. He also claimed that once these garbage treatment plants were commissioned and constructed, Goa would be the first State to have such facilities in the country.
The CM has urged people to support initiatives of the govt to make Goa “golden.”
“Cleanliness is one of the cores of our value systems. The government will try to minimize the use of plastic through public participation. It is our civic responsibility to maintain cleanliness in our surroundings,” he said.
Meanwhile, on the unemployment issue, Sawant appeared confident about the government’s ability to resolve the issue claiming that the government has been taking a “keen interest” in providing employment skills by introducing courses through the Ministry of Skill Development which will provide requisite exposure to youth.
Given the importance of June 18 in the History of Goa, the CM also said govt had distributed leaflets providing details of the day and its importance to schools.
Will provide govt jobs to kin

PANAJI: The Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has assured freedom fighters that he would fulfil their pending demands including providing jobs to their kin.
He also informed the gathering that the cost towards the medical treatment of ailing freedom fighter Mohan Rande has been born by the government.
Sawant also assured that he would preserve the memories of Ram Manohar Lohia and other freedom fighters. After eyebrows were raised last month when the CM unveiled a portrait of Hindutva philosopher Veer Savarkar at the Secretariat, side-stepping Goa’s own freedom fighters, the CM has now promised portraits of Ram Manohar Lohia, Purushottam Kakodkar, Bala Raya Mapari, T B Cunha, Vishwanath Narayan Lawande and Shabu Baban Naik Dessai. These will be displayed at prominent places at the Secretariat at Porvorim, he said.
