The symbolic presence of the mythical Raja Mahabali and Onasadhya (vegetarian lunch) were a major attraction of the Onam festival that was recently celebrated by the Kalpaka Cultural Association, Bicholim.
A large number of members of the Kerala community took part in the two-day festival at the Mahamaya Devasthan Bordem Bicholim, to commemorate the legendary Raja Mahabali, who is believed to visit his people each year.
The Kerala community showcased their culture during the two-day festival.
During the main programme, Deputy Speaker Anant Shet and Bicholim MLA Naresh Sawal greeted the Kerala community and lauded their efforts in organising the festival and depicting their culture.
On the occasion, meritorious SSC students were honoured by the guests.
According to the legend surrounding Onam, when King Mahabali was being pushed into the Underworld, he asked Lord Vishnu for one last wish to be permitted to visit Kerala once every year, to ensure that his people are happy and prosperous.
The wish was granted and Onam is the time when Mahabali symbolically visits his people.
