Ponda Police arrested a 29-year-old man from Nilgiri Hills, Dhavali-Ponda, on charges of possessing 5.500 kg of Charas worth Rs 20 lakh in the international market.
According to reports, police acted on a tip-off from the locals that accused Amogh Prakash Naik was engaged in drug peddling in Borim area, and was supplying it to local youth.
Ponda Police on Monday caught the accused red-handed below the Borim bridge at Azordem-Borim.
Police sources informed that youth from Borim and Shiroda are engaged in this illicit trade and more arrests may be carried out during the investigation.
A complaint on behalf of the State by Police Sub Inspector Paresh Sinari has been lodged at Ponda Police station. Police conducted the raid and caught the accused with bags of Charas. An offence has been registered under Section 20 (b) (ii) (C) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Police informed that the accused has been locked up in Ponda Police station, but were reluctant to answer queries regarding the remand period. Ponda police is investigating the case.
