The Orixt Porjecho Awaz (OPA), a local committee from Betul, has decided to stay firm on their stand to oppose DefExpo and aero show project at the Betul plateau.
At a public meeting at Canaguinim on Saturday, the OPA also decided to intensify the agitation and come on the streets in large numbers, if DefExpo is not scrapped by the government.
Speaking to The Goan, OPA Committee president Pressey Fernandes stated that OPA along with a majority of the locals from Betul, Naqueri, Canaguinim and nearby villages are firm on their stand to oppose the DefExpo and aero show project.
“We don't want the project even on temporary basis in Betul area,” said Fernandes.
Fernandes further said that during the meeting, the locals decided that all the MLAs along with the independent MLAs, who are against DefExpo at Betul, should call for an open debate in the upcoming assembly session and oppose the Central government's defence project at Betul.
“It was also decided to intensify the agitation and come on the streets in large numbers, if DefExpo project is not scrapped by the government,” Fernandes added.
A few locals alleged that the government was trying to bring the DefExpo project through the back door and bringing the project on temporary basis is a sheer exercise of testing the waters.
