The opposition MLAs walked into the House on Friday morning sporting black bands on their arms as a sign of protest against Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s insensitive comments asking parents to morally police their teenage daughters.
Several members of the Opposition decried the CM’s recent statements on the floor of the House in trying to shift the onus of security of children on the parents while discussing the gang-rape case in Benaulim.
They said instead of accepting that there was a law and order problem and ensuring that proper steps were taken so that such incidents don’t repeat; the CM was giving lectures on parenting to Goans.
“The CM should have tendered an apology for his insensitive comments,” said Vijai Sardessai, Fatorda MLA .
While sharing information in the House about the gang-rape in Benaulim on the first day of the monsoon session, the chief minister had urged the parents to keep an eye on their teenaged daughters and track their movements especially late in the night.
“It’s not right to always blame the police and the government on security lapse. If 14 and 15-year-old girls spend the whole night on the beach then we too have to introspect. Parents are also responsible, you cannot say that they are not listening,” Sawant had said.
