Opponents being silenced? asks Vijai

Citing the alleged minor rape case involving Santa Cruz MLA Babush Monserrate, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Tuesday sought to know whether the government was trying to put behind bars political opponents on trumped-up charges.

The defence on Monday revealed that the victim girl had made calls and sent SMS messages when she was allegedly being drugged and raped.
“I do not want to say that Babush is innocent or the allegations made against him are false. But the glaring inconsistencies put forth by the defence are indeed a matter of concern. The public prosecutor could not defend the government after the defence brought out the inconsistencies,” Vijai told the media on Tuesday.
Saying that he has not jumped the gun, but is only commenting based on media reports in the rape case, Vijai said it is indeed a matter of concern that such cases have come up against the government’s political opponents before the assembly elections. “Let justice be done to both the victim and the accused. What is presently happening is sensationalism. Let justice prevail for everybody,” he said, when asked whether he considers Babush as innocent.
