MARGAO
The alleged rape of a 70-year-old woman from Navelim has sparked outrage, with people demanding that the police conduct a sustained tenant verification campaign in the village.
Even as the local court has remanded accused Kashyappa Harijan to five days' police custody for investigation, a group of citizens from Navelim constituency, led by Sidhesh Bhagat, called on the Margao police to demand tenant verification of all migrants staying in the village.
“After the incident came to light, we have come to know that the police have been going slow in carrying out tenant verification in Navelim village. When a large number of migrants are staying in the Mandopa area, it is incumbent on the authorities to conduct an intensive tenant verification drive and bring all the migrants under the lens,” Bhagat said.
Condemning the alleged rape incident in Navelim reported on Thursday, Bhagat said the incident only goes to show the mindset of the accused. “Recently, there was the rape of a six-year-old girl. Now, a 70-year-old woman has been raped. This shows that it is the mindset of the accused that is responsible for the rising crimes against women,” he said, while demanding an intensive tenant verification campaign in the village.
