MARGAO
Hazard a guess how much quantity of chemical solution has been used by the fire services in South Goa division to sanitize public places since Covid raised its ugly head in the district in April.
A whopping 2005 litres of chemicals were used by the fire services in the jurisdiction of the fire stations of Margao, Curchorem, Canacona and Verna since April first to date.
That’s not all. Over 1000 places across these four fire station jurisdictions were sanitized by the firemen squad, especially constituted for the purpose of sanitizing public places.
The Margao fire station topped the list with the firemen attached to the station, sanitizing around 769 places across Salcete taluka, using 950 litres of the chemical solution.
The Curchorem fire station followed suit as the firemen attached to the station sanitized around 427 places in its jurisdiction by using 600 litres of chemicals.
The Canacona fire station sanitized around 245 places with 60 litres of chemicals, while the Verna station sanitized 203 places with 395 litres of chemicals.
Divisional Fire Officer, Nitin Raikar, said soon after Covid raised its ugly head in the state in April, the fire services constituted a squad of firemen to only look after the task of sanitizing of public places.
“We have put a system in place for the safety of our firemen entrusted with the task of sanitizing public places. No sooner they return to the fire station, they are made to have a steam bath and other precautions before they head home,” Raikar said.
With no end to the Covid-19 pandemic in sight, the
firemen brace up to continue this additional duty of sanitizing public places, apart from attending to fire and emergency calls.
