Director general of Police Muktesh Chander on Tuesday felicitated Pernem Police inspector Sandesh Chodankar and his team for nabbing the accused within few hours of the sensational rape of a British national at Canacona.
The crime had occurred on December 20 and within a few hours a team of the Pernem police station were able to nab the accused who had also committed a burglary of about Rs 32 lakh in a hotel at Pernem on December 18.
“Many times we punish our subordinates for misconduct done but reward and punishment should go side by side. When we punish delinquent officers it is also our duty to reward efficient ones”, Dr Chander said.
Dr Chander also released crime statistics of 2018 in which he said, there is a 8.26 percent decline in crimes reported in Goa as compared to the previous year.
There is significant decrease of 15.43 percent in heinous crime and 21 percent in rape cases during the year, Dr Chander claimed. He also said that 262 persons had died in road accidents during the year and police have seized 19,683 licences of which 4,325 have been
suspended.
The year also saw 52 cases of prostitution being booked.
Goa police have also prosecuted a total of 7.74 lakh traffic violators and collected fines amounting to Rs 9.19 crores during the year.
Over 220 cases were booked under NDPs Act and 237 persons arrested.
