Overseas employment scam leaves Goan youth stranded Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas with the group of youngsters at the Margao police station on Thursday.

MARGAO
A group of youngsters from Colva and nearby areas who aspired to travel to Belgium for employment have allegedly been left stranded after neither securing the promised jobs nor receiving a refund of the money they paid to an agent.

The youth have filed a complaint with Margao police, alleging they had paid money to an agent for arranging jobs abroad, including payments for visa processing and other formalities.

According to the complaint, the youth claimed they had paid Rs 2,91,176 and were allegedly assured that they would be sent to Belgium within three months upon payment of Rs 7 lakh.

The woman, who has been named by the youth, however, has denied all allegations, stating that she is not involved in any recruitment activities. She maintained that she had merely provided references when approached by the youth and asserted that they were directly dealing with the concerned agent.

The complainants have urged police to register a case against those responsible and help recover their hard-earned money. Margao police have initiated an investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas, who accompanied the youth to the police station, called on the government to take strict action against illegal recruitment agents. He expressed concern that Goan youth are increasingly falling prey to such scams due to a lack of local employment opportunities. Viegas also urged authorities to install awareness hoardings in prominent public places to caution job seekers against fraudulent agents.
