Panchayat polls: number of nominations keeps rising

Around 1,825 nominations were filed by aspiring candidates before the State Election Commission for the upcoming panchayat polls on Wednesday. Of these, 813nominations were filed in the five talukas of North Goa and 1,012 were received from seven talukas of South Goa.

The cumulative total of nominations so far is a little over 6,000 so far.  
PONDA 
The three returning officers appointed for the panchayat elections in Ponda taluka on Wednesday received 228 nominations, taking the total number of nominations to 763.   
Joao Fernandes, Mamlatdar and returning officer for Betki-Candola, Curti-Khandepar, Quriem, Tivrem-Orgao, Usgao-Ganje, Verem-Vaghurme and Volvoi, said he received 90 nominations. “The total for the last six days is 272 nominations,” he informed.   
Bhiku Gawas, Joint Mamlatdar and returning officer for Betora-Nirankal, Borim, Panchwadi and Shiroda said he received 73 nominations on Wednesday and the total is 225 nominations.   
Abhir Hede, Joint Mamlatdar and returning officer for Veling-Priol, Wadi-Talaulim, Durbhat, Kundaim, Bandora and Marcaim said he received 65 nominations. “So far, we have received 266 nominations,” Hede said.   
Many candidates with their supporters were present while filing the nominations.  
  BICHOLIM 
  The Bicholim Mamlatdar office on Wednesday received 127 nominations for the panchayat elections in Bicholim taluka.  
In Mulgao, one nomination was filed, Narvem (4), Shirgao (5), Pilgao (2), Ona-Maulingem (13), Menkurem (2), Advalpal (2), Sal (7), Latambarcem (10), Mayem (16), Karapur-Sarvan (14), Surla (20), Amona (8), Kudne (4), Navelim (4), Pale (4) and Velguem (11).  
CANACONA 
A total of 221 aspirants have filed their nominations for the 57 seats in the seven panchayats in Canacona taluka till Wednesday.  
On Wednesday, 95 nominations were filed at the Canacona Returning Officer and Mamlatdar Ramesh Gaonkar with the most 20 nominations alone for the nine-member Khola Panchayat.  
Nine nominations were filed in Agonda, Poinguinim (11), Cotigao (11), Shristhal (14), Gaondongrim (10) and Loliem-Polem (14).  
Prominent among to file nominations were Jagadish Bhiki Tawadkar (Amona), Vishal Prabhudessai (Kudal), Elda Fernandes(Ghodkamolem) for Poinguinim Panchayat, Agnelo Fernandes (Parvem), Shobavati Velip (Mudcheli) and Gregorio Alfonso ( Igrej-val) for Agonda Panchayat, Ajay Pagui (Saleri sarpanch), Purna Nayak (former Kazumol sarpanch) for Khola Panchayat, Sanju Naik (ex-Congress youth president, Mokhard) and Ganesh Velip for Shristhal Panchayat, Janu Velip, Barkelo Velip (sarpanch) for Gaondongrim Panchayat, Pamela Rodrigues, Deepak Pagui and Panch Shailesh Pagi for Loliem-Polem Panchayat. The total numbers of nominations filed in Bicholim taluka as on Wednesday are 498. 
The polls for 1,522 wards across 186 VPs will be held on June 11.

North Goa Cong lashes out at power outages

Irritated by the constant power shutdowns arranged by the electricity department, North Goa District Congress President Amarnath Panjikar said the frequency of power outages has increased recently by leaps and bounds.

Prolonged outages pose a severe inconvenience and have become irritating,” said Panjikar.   He said the department should find permanent solution for the power failures in a world were technology rules the roost.   “The department should engage well-maintained power system and should use standard electrical equipments,” he said.…
