Panchayats to get Rs 2.5 cr central aid

PANAJI

The Central government has promised around ₹2.5 crore for each village panchayat for five years under the 14th Finance Commission, Minister for Panchayats Rajendra Arlekar, who is currently on a visit to Delhi said.

“The view of the central government is that more funds should be given to gram (village) panchayats because the job of developing infrastructure in villages is that of panchayats and development should begin from the grassroot level,” Arlekar told The Goan.

“They have asked all panchayats to come up with a gram panchayat development plan and based on this plan funds will be distributed to them,” Arlekar said.

He said each panchayat could be eligible for ₹2.5 crore over five years over and above the funds they are expected to get under the Swachata Abhiyan Scheme, other infrastructure grants and funds for digitization under the e-governance scheme.
