The Goa’s Movement for Special Status (GMFSS) has claimed that Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar's recent statement on the issue of special status for Goa had betrayed the trust of the people in the State.
The GMFSS has hit out at Parsekar for stating that Goa should give up its claim for special status.
“It is becoming more and more obvious, with every utterance made by the representatives of the BJP government, both at the State and the Centre, that the ‘Special Status’ issue for Goa was only a ploy to fool the Goan electorate into voting the BJP to power in the 2014 parliamentary elections,” stated a press note by GMFSS President Prajal Sakhardande and Secretary Ajay Pereira.
Questioning Parsekar whether the unanimous resolution passed in the Goa Legislative Assembly, in April 2013, was also a mirage, the GMFSS said it did not augur well for a government that claims to have zero tolerance for corruption to mislead the people of Goa.
“During and after the last parliamentary elections, the people were made to believe that if both seats, North and South, were won by the BJP, the victory will give the State government the right to demand special status for Goa from the Central Government.”
“The GMFSS demands to know the efforts made by South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar to fulfil his promise of special status for Goa from the date he was elected, using special status for Goa as a plank for his campaign.”
“GMFSS also wants to know why then chief minister and present Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar held several meetings with GMFSS, to discuss and strategise with regards to the demand for special status for Goa?”
“Why did Parrikar promise GMFSS that he would lead an ‘all party delegation’ to Delhi to meet and place the demand before the Prime Minister/Home Minister?”
The GMFSS has demanded that Parsekar should not confuse Goans, by failing to differentiate between special status under Article 371, which is the demand of the people of Goa and Economic Special Status.
“Goans are demanding special status under Article 371 and not Economic Special Status, a fact that was much appreciated by Narendra Modi at the Sankalp rally held at Merces, to kick off the parliamentary election campaign in Goa.”
“And has Modi, now that he has become the Prime Minister, forgotten his promise to the people of Goa on Goan soil? The GMFSS's demand for special status under article 371 is for the protection of Goa’s identity, culture and its scarce land resources,” the release adds.
The GMFSS has reminded that the resolution for special status for Goa was unanimously passed by the House cutting across all party affiliations by all 40 MLAs, including the legislators of the opposition.
“It is therefore the responsibility of all 40 elected representatives to pursue this demand and not just that of Alina Saldanha or the members of GMFSS. The GMFSS will continue its struggle until it achieves its goal of special status for Goa under article 371 in the interest of Goa and its people,” the press note adds.
