Amidst the ongoing debate over the relocating of the Sunburn Electronic Dance Music (EDM) festival to South Goa, the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has assured that its government will not impose any event or project on the people against their wishes.
While acknowledging that a major event like Sunburn generates revenue and employment for the State, MLA Subhash Phal Dessai opined it is too early to comment on the event scheduled for December.
“The BJP is committed to ensuring that interests of the people are not compromised. Any projects will only proceed if the people are in favour of them. We won’t impose any project or development on them forcibly,” he said during a press conference at the BJP headquarters on Saturday.
When asked about the party’s stance on the recent developments concerning the event, he reiterated that it was premature to comment.
“It’s too premature to comment on the issue at this time. We will re-evaluate the situation if need be. People’s opinion is my opinion. If they do not want the event, we will revisit,” he said quickly adding, ‘For tourism, we undertake certain initiatives. Goa’s livelihood and employment are important but we will not force any event, project or celebration without the consent of the people. If the people want it, we support it. We will examine their reasons for opposition’.
