Two persons died from Covid and 19 new positive cases were detected as Covid cases crossed the 400 mark in Pernemtaluka on Tuesday.

According to the official bulletin, the death toll from Covid rose to 3 in Pernem after a 52-year-old man with co-morbid conditions died on Monday, while a 72-year-old man, also with co-morbid conditions, died on Tuesday. Both had been admitted at the GMC hospital.

According to sources, the 72-year-old man from Parcem was ill and was undergoing treatment at GMC. He passed away and his test later revealed that he had tested Covid positive. Both of his sons have home quarantined themselves.

Another 52-year-old man from Ugvem was bitten by a snake and died during treatment at GMC. He also later tested positive for Covid.

Meanwhile, there has been a steady rise in Covid cases in the taluka, as 19 more persons were tested positive and this includes 9 from the same family in Arambol.

On Tuesday, cases were detected in Arambol (12), Virnoda (1), Mandrem (1), Alorna (1), Dhargal (1), Ugvem (2) and Hasapur (1). The total Covid count now stands at 421.

Mandrem leads with 60 cases followed by Arambol (42), Korgao (40) and Pernem town (37).

Earlier on Monday, a foreign tourist had reportedly tested Covid positive in Arambol and this information was not passed on to the local panchayat.

Locals have expressed disappointment as the Arambolpanchayat does not have information if the tourist had visited other people or places.

“Authorities should this Covid-related information available to the respective panchayats so that further precautions can be taken,” said local panchPravinWaingankar.

Despite the rising cases in Pernem, there has been no progress on the proposed Covid care centre at the Multipurpose Indoor Stadium at Sawalwada-Pernem.

“The government has spent over Rs 32 crore on this complex and the building is currently under the control of the health department. The Covid care centre was supposed to have started over a month ago,” said a source.
