After a gap of more than two weeks, the Mapusa municipal fish market was reopened to the public on Tuesday.
The fish market was shut down after the fish vendor’s association president first tested positive for Covid and later, some of the colleagues were also found to be positive.
The staple diet of Goans was out of bounds for residents of Mapusa from August 5 when the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) decided to shut down the market as part of precautionary measures to arrest the spread of Covid.
“We have opened the fish market from today (Tuesday). But restrictions will continue to be maintained. We have allowed a minimum number of vendors to do business inside the fish market. People have also been advised not to crowd inside the market and maintain social distancing norms,” said MMC Chairperson Ryan Braganza.
Surprisingly, the reopening of the fish market received a lukewarm response on Tuesday as not many customers visited the market.
“Since the market has been reopened after almost 20 days, the response was expected. People were not aware that the market would be opened on Tuesday. Once people come to know, the flow will also pick up,” a councillor said.
The fish market was shut down indefinitely after the Mapusa fish market association president tested positive on August 5. After a week some more fish vendors from the market tested positive.
The Mapusa Municipal Council then decided to shut down the fish market and reopen it only after the Chaturthi festival.
Although the sprawling municipal fish market was closed for public, vendors on the periphery of the town were seen doing brisk business selling choicest fish to consumers.
