Phase 2: Govt announces schedule to fix digital meters for tourist cabs

PANAJI
In a second phase of fixing digital fare meters to tourist taxis the transport department has announced a schedule for fixing digital fare meters to cabs with vehicle number ending with 2 or 3. The last date of fixing is August 18.

The first phase of fitting digital fare meters with vehicle number ending with 0 or 1 received a less response from taxi operators.

The government is facing the difficult times in convincing tourist taxi operators to fit in digital fare meters as tourist taxi operator leaders have said that they will not fit the digital taxi meters.

“In this lockdown period when there is no business it is difficult for taxi operators to fit in meters,” said Chetan Kamat of Goa tourist taxi association.

Some taxi operators who have taxis providing service to government departments, black and white taxi operators have fixed the digital meters.

Government has provided 50 per cent post fixing subsidy on digital fare meters.

In a bid to make taxi operators to fall in line, the government however has warned the tourist taxi operators that a permit of the defaulting taxi operators will be cancelled.

The agency Securinex Inc which has been allotted work to fit in digital fare meters has set up installation centres at Porvorim, Vasco, Fatorda (Margao) and Mapusa to facilitate installation of digital fare meters.
