PORVORIM
The issues of segregation of garbage, water problem, tenant verification, pollution of wells and other issues dominated the Pilerne-Marra gram sabha on Sunday.
Sarpanch Amarnath Govekar said the officials of Saligao garbage treatment plant are not accepting mixed garbage at the plant and they have informed the panchayat to send only wet garbage.
“As per the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage Control Act, fine to the tune of Rs 200 to 5000 and imprisonment of 1 month can be imposed on the house owner and Rs 2000 to 25000 and imprisonment of 6 months can be imposed on commercial establishment for non-segregation and dumping of waste on the roads,” said Govekar.
“Now, the panchayat has been empowered to impose these fines and we have decided to act strictly in this regard.”
The sarpanch further said that it has been observed that house owners are not submitting tenant verification forms to Porvorim Police station as required under law.
“Porvorim Police has decided to visit house-to-house on February 2, 3 and 4 and check whether the owner has submitted the verification forms. If not, police will take necessary legal action,” he said.
When villagers complained of water shortages, Govekar asked the residents to immediately inform the panchayat about the same in writing so that the panchayat could take up the matter with the PWD.
Some villagers complained about pollution of wells and digging of roads by PWD. Govekar said the panchayat proposes to desilt the polluted wells, but was helpless as far as the PWD and digging of roads was concerned.
