A rupture in the water pipeline during road-widening works near Canca has left residents of Calangute and Candolim with acute water shortage since the last two days.

According to reports, the 100 MLD water pipeline along the Mapusa-Calangute road ruptured during road-widening works near Bodgini-Canca, leading to water shortage in Calangute and Candolim.

The ruptured pipeline also caused hardship to motorists at the site, as thousands of litres of water went gushing out of the damaged pipeline and flowed onto the road. There was a long queue of vehicles between the busy Parra and Mapusa route, as authorities struggled to regulate traffic.

The residents affected in the two villages had to make arrangements to procure water through tankers, as repair works are also going on at the Assonora water treatment plant since the past few days.

When contacted, PWD engineer Raut confirmed that the 100 MLD pipeline had been damaged by the JCB while road-widening work was underway along the Mapusa-Parra road.

“The pipeline has been repaired by the workers and regular water supply will resume from Tuesday,” informed Raut.
