Newly elected Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Leo Rodrigues on Wednesday said plans were afoot to shift roadside fruit vendors at the temporary Vasco fish market shed to decongest the main FL Gomes Road.
Rodrigues was speaking to reporters in the presence of Councillors Shami Salkar and Girish Borker and Chief Officer Jayant Tari after a joint inspection at the temporary Vasco fish market shed.
"There has been a demand from vendors that they needed an additional shed in the rains and we have agreed to put an additional temporary shed. They also said traditional fruit vendors were not having good business because other fruit vendors are placed by the roadsides outside the fish market.”
“We are now planning to shift roadside vendors inside the premises so that there is fair business. This will also clear the footpath and decongest the main FL Gomes Road used by heavy vehicles, while also providing more parking space," said Rodrigues.
Councillor Shami Salkar said the inspection was conducted to understand if vendors who have recently been shifted to the temporary premises were facing any issues.
"We decided to get the contractor along so that grievances and teething problems could be resolved on top priority. There were some issues of water logging and extension of shed that have been agreed upon as of now," said Salkar.
"Local fruit vendors were complaining about fruit vendors outside the market. We have now asked fruit vendors outside the premises to restrict their stalls till the footpath by Monday and avoid encroachment of roads. We may soon make provision to shift them inside the premises," said Salkar.
MMC Councillor Girish Borker said the council will try and get fish and fruit vendors on one platform so that all of them can be accommodated in one premises, to ensure that roads and footpaths are free from encroachments.
