Forest officials from Canacona arrested a poacher from Poinguinim while on a hunting expedition in the jurisdiction of Cotigao wildlife Sanctuary late Thursday night.
According to Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary Range Forest Officer (RFO), Vishwananth Pingulkar, one Devidas Deikar was caught with a locally-made gun and pellets on Thursday night while he was on a hunting mission in the jurisdiction of Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary.
The foresters, while on a patrolling trip, found Deikar, a resident of Amone-Poinguinim, moving suspiciously in the forest cover, with arms, besides a torch, looking to hunt wild-animals in the wildlife sanctuary of Cotigao.
He was produced in the court of the JMFC at Canacona and was released on a bond, with instructions to report to Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary RFO at Hathipal Rescue Centre for a period of five days.
Besides Pingulkar, Foresters Keshav Pagi and Sidhesh Naik, and driver Prakash Devidas, took part in the arrests.
Pingulkar further informed that intense patrolling, especially during night time, is carried out to protect wildlife under threat from poachers.
