Police arrest history-sheeter in Candolim theft-assault case

In a major breakthrough for Goa Police, notorious history-sheeter Agustinho Carvalho has been taken into custody in yet another case of theft and assault. Extensive search at his hideouts and subsequent camping by local police in Arambol- Keri for over 48 hours led to the arrest of the criminal having at least 25 cases registered against him across various police stations.

Superintendent of (North Goa) Police Nidhin Valsan said that CCTV recordings of the crime that occurred on the night of November 30, Wednesday at Calangute Tinto, established Carvalho’s identity after which a massive hunt was launched to trace his whereabouts.

“During the investigation, a team headed by PI Calangute (Dattaguru Sawant) verified the CCTV footage and traced the car involved in the crime. On continuous follow-up, it was revealed that Carvalho, a habitual offender involved in several typical crimes, has committed the theft where he also hurt the complainant,” Valsan told reporters.

A successful crackdown was possible with the cops extensively searching all his and thereafter laying a trap in the coastal part of Arambol.

“Carvalho’s possible hideouts were thoroughly searched by the PI who along with his team camped at Arambol-Keri by concealing their identity. He was finally apprehended from Arambol today (Friday),” the SP said conceding that Carvalho is a hardcore active criminal with over 20 serious crimes against him at various police stations in Goa.

The present case pertains to an incident on Wednesday when one Arjun Bedadolakar was offered a drop by Carvalho in the latter’s car at Calangute. While alighting from the car at his destination, Bedadolakar was taken aback when Carvalho snatched his gold chain and Rs 9,500 cash and fled away.  The weight of the gold chain is 9gms valued at Rs 50,000.

The Calangute police registered a case under sections 323 (causing hurt), 356 (assaulting or using criminal force on any person, in attempting to commit theft), and 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code against an unknown person and began an investigation.  

With the history-sheeter’s arrest, Calangute police revealed that he is also wanted in a non-bailable offense registered in another police station while his involvement in other theft cases is also not ruled out.

As per details shared by the North Goa Police, the accused is convicted in two cases, acquitted in three cases while one case is disposed and a few others are pending trial.
