Goa Police personnel fanned out to different places across the South Goa district on Wednesday but for a different reason.

The exercise had nothing to do with any law and order situation, but the men in uniform carried out a major outreach to the citizens affected by recent cybercrime frauds.

With the police in South Goa registering over 15 cybercrime cases last month, and more and more people falling victim to the machinations of fraudsters, all the police stations spread across the South Goa district held an unprecedented awareness exercise on cybercrime in a bid to educate the public and caution them against falling prey to cybercriminals.

Around 37 interactive sessions were organised throughout the district, with the police stations across South Goa holding one, two, and even more meetings with members of the public. The audience ranged from taxi drivers to motorcycle riders, migrant fishing crew members to students and parents, as well as market vendors, across the district.

District police chief, South, SP Tikam Singh Verma said the men in uniform across South Goa participated in the interactive exercise with members of the public to raise awareness about cybercrimes. “Today’s exercise focussed on spreading awareness among the people. The police provided tips, the do’s and don’ts, and the options available for redressing their grievances,” he said.

When asked whether today’s exercise would be carried out on a routine basis, SP Verma said, “As per the central government directive, the police are required to hold the interactive session on cybercrime on the first Wednesday of every month. Hence, all the police stations in South Goa have participated in the exercise. Similar interactions will take place in the future as well,” he added.
