VALPOI: Local police will step up vigilance in Sattari taluka, following the seizure of huge amounts of ketamine by revenue intelligence officials from a factory at Pissurlem Industrial Estate on Monday.
The inability of local police to detect such a huge quantity of ketamine from a factory has been questioned by locals, with many left wondering how the police had been clueless about the drugs stored in the factory.
When contacted, DySP Gurudas Gawade said the local police was not aware about presence of huge quantities of ketamine in Pissurlem.
“If police had information from reliable sources, they would have verified it. Strict vigilance will now be maintained to intercept and tackle illegalities in Sattari taluka,” said DySP Gawade.
Meanwhile, the seizure of ketamine from an unused factory at the Pissurlem Industrial Estate and the arrest of three persons, including a UK national, in connection with this has led to questions of wider links to the drugs mafia and the presence of drugs in the hinterlands of the State.
Three persons were arrested in Mumbai and during interrogations, one of the accused reportedly disclosed the presence of ketamine at the Pissurlem factory.
This had led revenue intelligence officials to raid the factory at Pissurlem on Monday at about 2.30 pm and investigations continued till 8 am on Tuesday. Large amounts of ketamine were seized from the premises and the factory was later sealed.
