After boycotting classes for the past four days, a group of parents of a city-based school on Monday called on the district collector, South and the education director with a plea to shift the primary and pre-primary class rooms either to the Old Collectorate building or to any other safe building contending that the rented school building used by the Popular school management is not safe for their wards.
Chairman of the Popular school management, Avdhut Parrikar, however, told The Goan that the management has already discontinued holding the primary school classes in the rented building and is presently conducting the classes in the afternoon session. Parents, however, contended that not all the students have been shifted out of the premises, reiterating that the building is unsafe.
The parents told the district and education authorities that the school building premises is not at all safe for their wards, questioning the structural stability of the building. They have requested Collector Dr Sachin Shinde and Education Director G Bhat to rehabilitate the school students into the old Collectorate building on a temporary basis till the school management looks out for new premises. They also narrated their grievance to Nuvem MLA Mickky Pacheco in the Collectorate building, as he took up the matter with the deputy chief minister for a solution.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Popular High School, Margao Avduth Parrikar told The Goan that only a few parents are raising objections to the management decision to conduct the primary classes in the Popular school building in the afternoon session as a stop gap arrangement. “When the parents raised the issue of the safety of the school building, the management decided to hold the primary classes in the Popular school main building in the afternoon session. Some of the parents, however, have opposed the afternoon classes for the primary students, while majority of the students are attending their classes," he claimed.
He, however, said the management is working out various temporary solutions to the school building issue, including the possibility of appointing an independent expert to test the structural stability of the primary school building.
