Calls for immediate shifting of office to new complex

The ageing Cuncolim Municipal Council building shows signs of crumbling with concrete material falling down have literally become the order of the day, but there seemed no urgency in shifting the Municipal office to the new complex inaugurated over two years ago in the heart of the town.

If opposition BJP councillor Vishal Desai claimed that the building is vibrating and a portion of a concrete slab just missed him recently, newly-elected Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Landry Mascarenhas has echoed similar sentiments, favouring for the early shifting of the CMC office to the new building.

Moreover, many in the corridors of the municipal building and outside maintained that shifting of the Municipal office to the new building would also give a boost to shops and business establishments in the new building auctioned to the bidders.

“The CMC building is vibrating so much so that parts of concrete slab just missed falling on me. This Municipal building has outlived its utility. It should have been shifted long ago when the new building was inaugurated by the former MLA. Shifting of the Municipal office would not only ensure the safety of the members of the public, staff and councillors, but would help generate business for the shops and establishments auctioned in the new building,” councillor Vishal said.

Newly-elected CMC Chairperson Landry has underscored the need for the early shifting of the CMC office to the new building. “The Council had taken a resolution in the past to shift the CMC office to the new building, but nothing has changed on the ground. It’s now two years since the new building was inaugurated,” he said.

Saying that the councillors are in favour of the shifting of the CMC office to the new building, Landry said would go by the previous resolution adopted by the civic body for shifting the office to the new building.
