The Comba subway was closed for traffic on Friday evening due to waterlogging, triggering traffic chaos near the railway crossing.
Locals and representatives of educational institutions questioned the decision to shut the subway with barricades when the PWD is mandated to pump out the water from the subway round the clock.
Fears were raised in local quarters that the decision to shut the subway on Friday may keep the subway closed during the weekend, with locals pointing out that the authorities should have gone for pumping out the water instead of shutting the subway for traffic. “If the authorities have shut the subway for traffic, it means the road underpass will remain closed for traffic over the next two days on Saturday and Sunday. Instead, the PWD workers should have been directed by the authorities to pump out the water with the arrangements in place so that the underpass remains open for traffic during the weekend as well as on Monday,” remarked a local resident Manoj Hede.
As barricades were erected at the entry point to the subway on the ring road side, traffic went haywire at the Comba level crossing. When the level crossing was closed for traffic on Friday evening, it only resulted in traffic snarls with a number of vehicles on both sides of the level crossing jostling to cross the tracks to reach to their destinations.
