The Congress candidates from the Zilla Panchayat constituencies of Porvorim area have sworn in an affidavit pledging their loyalty to the party.

They stated that “they will not shift their loyalty to any other party or independent candidate after getting elected in the Zilla Panchayat elections”.

Congress candidate Sarvesh Naik of Socorro Zilla Panchayat constituency and Padrinha Gracies of Penha-De-Franca constituency have sworn in such affidavits, although the Congress party has not asked for it.

The candidates have voluntarily come up with an oath on affidavit and have made the affidavit public on social media platforms.

“We have not made it a compulsion for any candidate to give an affidavit swearing loyalty towards the party. The party has not been accepting such affidavits from the candidates. The candidates may be swearing on such affidavits at their level,” said GPCC President Girish Chodankar.

The traditional anti-BJP voters from Goa have been frustrated with the Congress leaders due to their past experience as 10 MLAs shifted from the Congress to join the ruling BJP flank overnight.

The AAP candidate Valmiki Naik was the first to come with such an affidavit during the assembly elections when he was contesting from Panaji. He had challenged his competitor Atanasio Monserrate to swear on affidavit he will not jump party after getting elected.
