PORVORIM
The Porvorim stretch of the NH 66 highway has rapidly turned into one of the busiest routes, prompting authorities to install the sixth traffic signal along a 4-km route.
The latest traffic signal has been installed at the Rotary Club Garden near the petrol pump.
With traffic along the Panjim“Mapusa highway growing by leaps and bounds in recent years, Porvorim has become a major connecting point to Saligao, Mapusa, Betim, Pilerne, Britona and other places.
A large number of vehicles proceeding between Betim and Panaji take a turn near the Rotary Club Garden junction.
At times, police are deployed at this junction to regulate traffic but when they are not present, traffic chaos prevails on the Panaji-Mapusa and Betim-Porvorim routes, especially during peak hours.
Following a number of road mishaps in the area, locals put forth a demand for a traffic signal. At a recent meeting by Porvorim Rising to hear grievances of residents, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte assured residents that he would get a traffic signal installed at the crucial junction.
When contacted, Penha de Franca panch Shyam Kamat said the junction at the Rotary Club Garden had become an accident-prone zone.
“There were persistent demands from residents at a gram sabha to install traffic signals at the junction. We had communicated this demand to our MLA, who got this traffic signal installed through a private party.”
“Once this traffic signal becomes operational, there will be smooth movement of traffic and accidents will be reduced,” said Kamat.
There are now six traffic signals along a 4-km stretch of the highway and they are located at the Socorro-Aradi junction, JMJ hospital, Porvorim Church, Coqueiro Junction, Delfino Supermarket and Rotary Club Garden.
