Porvorim police filed a third chargesheet before the court in the infamous jobs-for-cash scam in relation to offences committed by a Merces resident Gautam Asnotkar by accepting cash from individuals on the pretext of providing them a government job.
In this case, the chargesheet charges Asnotkar with offences under multiple provisions of law for taking up to Rs 5 lakh from the complainants and promising to provide them government jobs.
The chargesheet is voluminous at 128 pages and is the third chargesheet filed in the jobs-for-cash scam which put the government of Pramod Sawant on the back foot after people from across the State came forward with complaints that they were duped for money due to the allure of a government job.
Multiple cases and FIRs have been registered at different police stations apart from Porvorim in the scam and in one case, a government official who was named was found dead, hanging from a tree in mysterious circumstances days after he went missing on being notified by the police to join the investigation.
The Sawant government meanwhile has staved off immense pressure from the Opposition and refrained from ordering a judicial probe into the case which has state-wide ramifications.
