The reservoir at the Porvorim Water Treatment plant in Porvorim has finally begun receiving water from Tillari after a number of weeks.
When contacted, PWD Assistant Engineer Dattaram Raikar said the reservoir at the Porvorim water treatment plant started receiving water from Tillari at around 6 am on Thursday.
“The storage capacity of the reservoir is 20 MLD. It will take at least 24 hours for the reservoir to get filled up. We have taken a sample of the water as per procedure for testing purpose.”
“Once the reservoir gets full, the PWD will treat the water and release it to the people. In all probability, there will be regular supply of water from Friday,” said Raikar.
Residents in Porvorim constituency, especially those residing on the plateau, had been worst hit due to acute water shortage.
There was a breakdown in the pipeline at Cunchelim-Mapusa, which connects raw water supply from Tillari to Guirim and Porvorim. As a result, there was no supply of raw water to the Porvorim water treatment plant.
It took nearly two weeks for the PWD to lay a 1-km new pipeline. During the last 15 days, the PWD began supplying water to residents of Porvorim from the Assnora treatment plant, but there was no fixed timing for the release of water by PWD.
The water was being released every alternate day and that too, for a short duration of half an hour. The low water pressure had compelled residents to hire private water tankers at exorbitant rates.
