Posing as an aide of an IAS bureaucrat, one Dinkar Sawant and another accomplice lured a Tisk-Usgao businessman to pay up a whopping Rs 10.5 lakh on the pretext of helping him to win a vehicle-leasing annual contract from a city five-star hotel.
Panaji police booked a first information report (FIR) on Saturday, after the businessman Mukesh Naik, filed his complaint narrating the tale. Sawant and his accomplice Sameer Dhanaskar were booked for cheating under sections 419 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Naik has alleged in his complaint that the duo lured him with the promise of getting him a contract to rent out 'Innova' cars to the starred hotel located in the capital city.
Sawant claimed to be the personal assistant of an IAS officer and the duo extorted Rs 10.50 lakh in cash from Naik. Further, to make their yarn sound credible, the duo made Naik give his pan card, voter ID card and caste certificate as well.
Naik told the police in his complaint that there is no sign of the duo or the car rental contract from the five-star hotel.
Police sub-inspector Mayur Panashikar is investigating the case but has declined to identify the hotel at this stage. PSI Panashikar has also declined to identify the IAS officer, whose personal assistant one of the accused impersonated.
