Soon after the Diwali festival, prices of vegetables in the wholesale vegetable market here have shown a steady rise.
Prices of some leafy vegetables have increased marginally, while prices of tomato, brinjal, capsicum, cabbage and cauliflower have either remained stable or decreased marginally.
When asked about the present trend, a wholesale vegetable seller said this normally happens soon after Diwali festival.
“As the Diwali faraal (traditional sweets) are over, people tend to turn back to vegetables, which results in demand of vegetables, due to which prices rise marginally, whereas due to steady supplies this season, prices are stable compared to every year,” Umesh Patil said in a lighter vein.
Other wholesalers too echoed Patil’s view and said the present trend is expected to continue for a period of over a fortnight. This is because farmers who are busy in Diwali festival, and harvesting paddy and other crops also commences with the plucking of vegetables, due to which prices are expected to remain stable in next couple of weeks.
Compared to last week, prices of some vegetables were marginally higher. Prices of onion and potato too have increased marginally. The green peas, however, were not available like last week.
