Senior Power official Kashinath Shetye along with department staff cracked a whip on cables hanging on electric poles in the commercial capital on Friday.
Equipped with cutters and a crane, Shetye went about the job of cutting the cables hanging on the electric poles in the Aquem area of the city.
The Executive Engineer led from the front as he cut bundles of cables tied on the electric poles.
He told The Goan that the stability of the electric poles has come under strain because of bundles of cables tied to the poles, posing danger to the motorists and pedestrians alike. “We have found the stability of the electric poles coming under strain wherever the cables are tied on the poles. Hence, in the interest of public safety, the Electricity Department has carried out the drive against the cables,” he said.
Action against the overhead cables on electric poles came days after a city-based activist Andrew Sequeira’s video went viral. Complimenting Kashinath Shetye for his bold action against cables hanging on the electric poles, Andrew said this action was long overlooked but was never initiated for reasons best known to the Power officials.
“Kudos to Electricity engineer Kashinath Shetye for leading from the front to remove the overhead cables hanging on the power cables. I fail to understand why similar action was not forthcoming from the power officials all this time,” he said.
