Power overload haunts Pednekars: Weekends bring nightmares

Fluctuating demand due to tourism affects villagers

PERNEM

The incidents of power shortage and interruption in continuous supply of electricity are on the rise in Pernem and Korgao. The other villages in the taluka are also facing a similar problem. As Pernem and Korgao are in the coastal area, overloading issue is the main cause of shortage in power supply here. The people of neighbouring Mandrem too are also in the same boat, according to sources.

Due to Harmal, Mandrem, Morjim being popular coastal areas, they attract a large flow of tourists and a continuous electricity supply is required to meet their demands. The tourists mostly stay here on weekends, leading to a temporary surge in demand. While the power supply in these is uninterrupted, other neighbouring villages are reported to be suffering. The people living in these villages have to face power cuts on a regular basis.

In an effort to resolve the issue of power supply in Pernem and Mandrem, work is being carried out on a new power substation at Mandrem.

A new power substation is being constructed on the border of Harmal and Mandrem. Underground cables will also be laid soon. The work will take few months to complete, and it is only then that the public in Pernem and Mandrem will get a good power supply. This substation will end their woes, according to Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar.

Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar also assured that the officials from the Electricity Department are working to solve the problem of overloading in the taluka. The problem has arisen here because there is more electricity supply in this area. However, the substation at Mandrem will solve this problem and the public living here will no more face electricity issues.

Vinita Mandrekar from Korgao informed that the women in this area have started small scale businesses. They have set up machines that work on electricity for this purpose. If power supply gets interrupted, the industries suffer too.

Aarti Desai from Mainwada-Korgao said, “The power issue is related to water supply too. When the deep fridges in our shops remain shut due to no power supply, the items stored in them gets damaged and we incur losses. If we voice our issues on the social media platforms, we are targeted.”
