For the first-time in many years, the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) began pre-monsoon works early in the municipality.
As part of the pre-monsoon works, CMC workers cleaned the gutters and drains in the commercial hub of Chaudi.
According to locals, these pre-monsoons works were carried out earlier for the first time in many years.
“The clogged drains and gutters in Chaudi would usually be cleaned only at the fag end of May, by which time the pre-monsoon rains would cause rainwater to flood the streets and residential areas in CMC’s commercially important ward,” said a local.
During the council's first meeting to elect various committees, CMC Chairperson Simon Rebello had directed the municipal administration to immediately begin pre-monsoon works, to prevent streets from getting flooded during the rains.
The CMC municipal engineer had assured to depute workers in all wards in a time-bound manner and councillors would be free to utilise the services of workers as per requirements in their wards.
Since Tuesday, Chaudi Councillor Ramakant Naikgaunkar deployed the municipal workers to clean roadside gutters and drains.
