Taking note of public suggestions, Belagavi civic authorities will develop the Fort Lake and other historical and heritage centres as part of plans to beautify the city, in a bid to attract more visitors from Goa and other places.
In another significant move, the residents would now get piped gas under the Smart City project for the first time in north Karnataka region.
The decisions were taken after a marathon meeting with the citizens regarding the implementation of the Smart City Mission launched on June 25, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Briefing media persons after the meeting, City Corporation Commissioner G Prabhu said 49,193 households will get piped natural gas connection through the city gas distribution network over five years under the smart city project.
“A private company has been awarded the contract for the development of the distribution network in an area of 13,399 sq km, covering major residential areas of the city. The company would be responsible for laying the network and distributing natural gas for all categories of customers, while the focus would be on domestic customers,” said Prabhu.
Apart from gas distribution network, which is one of the five projects to be taken up under the Smart City mission project, works on the beautification of the city, including development of Fort Lake, Vaccine Institute and other historical and heritage centres would be taken up simultaneously.
Among other works, establishment of a sewage treatment plant under the Atal Mission for rejuvenation and urban transformation by the Karnataka Water Supply and Drainage Board, fixing of GPRS systems on vehicles engaged in the disposal of solid waste, setting up free WiFi hot spots at five locations by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and installation of fabricated public toilets at 15 places would be implemented.
He said all the works would be planned and a detailed project report would be prepared by the project management consultancy.
