“An educational project of international repute is non-polluting and will open up several avenues to villagers in self-employment like transport, eateries, restaurants, lodging and the like,” the sarpanch told the residents.
Speaking further, Prabhugaonkar assured his ward that all villagers would be taken into confidence on each and every aspect of the project once the Central government finalizes on the Loliem site for the proposed IIT. “The IIT-Goa is still in a preliminary stage,” Prabhugaonkar informed.
In his speech, Shree Nirakar Education Society Chairman Prashant Naik said unnecessary and unfounded fears were being created in the minds of villagers by those opposing the project.
“Thousands of Loliem villagers have had to migrate to different cities in Goa, India and even abroad, in search of employment, as the village could not provide a livelihood for the villagers,” said Naik.
“The villagers in the past had been united in opposed mining and tourism-related projects in the village, for fear of environmental pollution,” Naik asserted.
He requested the residents to attend the Gram Sabha in large numbers, which would be convened by Loliem-Polem Panchayat in near future to decide on the proposed project.
