About 50-odd PVS members gathered at PMC and submitted a fresh memorandum to PMC iin this regard.
In May, PMC had worked out a new formula of sopo tax to recover the outstanding amount of more than Rs 1 crore from the vendors operating in the market shed. The local body had fixed Rs 7 per square metre for 2014-15 and will add Rs 1 for the subsequent years.
Objecting to the PMC’s move, PVS said the sopo issue was sub-judice, as the matter is pending in the High Court.
“Your office could have approached the Sanghatana regarding sopo tax, but your office with the ill motive of harassing the vendors purposely issued demand
notice to us,” stated the memorandum.
However, PVS has shown willingness to resolve the sopo issue amicably.
PVS has demanded action against a hotel, which they claimed is reportedly running illegally, and also the removal of a vendor who has occupied another’s place.
Speaking to The Goan, Kishore Mamlekar said the rates formulated by PMC are not accepted. “As per its formula, Rs 1 is added every year. So in another 10 years, we will have the
burden of double rate,” Mamlekar said.
PMC firm on razing Shastri hall building
PONDA: The Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) has decided to serve notices to the shopkeepers doing business in Shastri hall building to ‘vacate and shift’ to another PMC building to make way for its demolition.
The council meeting, presided over by Chairperson Dr Radhika Nayak, decided to go ahead with the new project in place of the dilapidated Shastri hall building. Chief Officer Navanth Naik and other councilors were present at the meeting.
In April, PMC had resolved to demolish this six decade old dilapidated Shastri hall building. PMC will also shift the library from the building to another location.
“We will send notices to the shopkeepers by the end of this month. They will be given opportunity to shift in PMC’s market complex,” Nayak said.
Nayak also discussed the issue of Kranti Maidan, which is expected to be inaugurated before June 18 and said it should be allowed as Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has requested.
She lamented that PWD, which has carried out the beautification work, has not even informed them about the inauguration date. “We came to know about it from reporters. Still, we are allowing this inauguration as chief minister has requested us,” she said.
“Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has assured that our concerns will be properly handled. Handing over of Kranti Maidan will take place after two-three months,” she added.
“PMC is optimistic that the government will sanction grants for the maintenance of Kranti Maidan. If required, we will also recruit staff,” she said.
