Shetye was arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau of the Department of Vigilance a week ago after he was caught red-handed at his office in Panaji while accepting an amount of Rs 25,000, a part of the Rs 95,000 bribe that he had allegedly demanded for granting a No Objection Certificate for issuing three licenses for storage of explosives.
In consonance with the rules which govern such circumstances, the senior bureaucrat was placed under suspension by the vigilance department on behalf of the government.
The investigating team of the ACB sought judicial custody of Shetye as his five-day police custody concluded on Tuesday. In its say, the ACB stated that having Shetye in judicial custody would ensure his availability to the police during the probe while also mentioning that a bureaucrat of his stature is in a position to influence the probe.
Speaking to reporters at the police headquarters, Superintendent of Polcie Bosco George stated, “After trapping him successfully, we have all the prima facie evidence that we need to make out the offence. We have begun to probe his property, investment, bank accounts and lockers to check for disproportionate assets.”
However, not much was found in the two bank lockers belonging to Shetye and his wife checked by the ACB.
The FIR against Shetye was booked on May 19 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
