The Water Supply Department has cleaned the lone drinking water tank and overgrown bushes surrounding the tank at the rehabilitated Valkini Colony No 1 in Sanguem.
The action was initiated after authorities took notice of a report in ‘The Goan’, highlighting the poor condition of the water tank. Local Bhati Panch Manoj Paryekar had voiced serious concern over the quality of drinking water supplied to residents of Valkini, after he found out that the lone water tank, from where drinking water is supplied to Valkini village, was not cleaned for over six years.
Paryekar had also complained about overgrown bushes surrounding the water tank and the dilapidated condition of the water tank. Paryekar claimed the tank needed urgent reconstruction as pieces of concrete from the tank had started falling down.
Incidentally, the three colonies at Valkini are inhabited by villagers from Curdi village, who were displaced at the time of construction of Selaulim Dam, which provides water to most of South Goa.
Acting on The Goan report, the Water Supply Department immediately took the first step of cleaning the water tank and also put labourers to clear the overgrown bushes that surrounded the water tank. Sources informed that the department has also begun following up on the file put up for the reconstruction of the water tank in the village, as the tank has become old and needs replacement.
Paryekar informed that the Bhati Panchayat has also written to the Water Resources Department to expedite the process of issuing a no-objection certificate to the Water Supply Department for the construction of the water tank.
