Weeks after Tivim’s Congress MLA Nilkanth Halarnkar raised his voice against water scarcity in his constituency, the Public Works Department has come up with a temporary solution to supply potable water through tankers in areas hit by scarcity.

The PWD has issued a tender worth Rs 18.64 lakhs for supply of water through tankers for the year 2019.

Recently, Halarnkar had raised the issue of irregular water supply to his constituency as well as other areas in Bardez taluka.

In addition to supply of water through tankers, the PWD has also issued an additional eight tenders totally valued at Rs One crore to sort out water supply problems in these areas, including additional manpower for Assonora water treatment plant which caters to Bardez.

Halarnkar had recently demanded the resignation of PWD Minister, Sudin Dhavalikar for his failure to solve the water shortage issue and provide the people of Bardez taluka with proper water supply.

He had alleged that locals are fed up with the perennial water shortage plaguing Bardez, Pernem and parts of Bicholim taluka over the past few months.

Halarnkar had pointed out that the PWD Minister has totally neglected Bardez despite giving assurance on the floor of the House.

After these allegations, the department has tendered for additional contract labour for maintenance of the Assonora plant and also for procurement of alumina ferric for treatment of raw water there.

Tenders which were floated recently also includes work for laying of 110mm PVC pipelines at Gaura Waddo, Calangute to avoid contamination of water and improvement of supply in that area.

Another tender has been floated for replacement of distribution pipeline from the Government Primary School to Mainwada Church in Korgao village panchayat of Pernem.

Computerisation of water connection files up to 1990 in Bardez taluka, hiring of vehicle for the office of the Pernem Assistant Engineer and engagement of labourers for day-to-day maintenance work at Torsem-Ugvem-Tambosem-Mopa areas have also been tendered.
