Officials of the PWD, sewerage, who used a short-cut mode to tackle overflowing sewage in the Madel area of Fatorda, now face action under the Public Health Act.
The Margao Urban Health Officer Anju Kharangate has notified the Executive Engineer, PWD, under Section 40 Sub-Section (10 of the Goa, Daman & Diu Public Health Act, 1985) to abate the nuisance and comply.
The notice comes after a joint inspection of two sites where the PWD had discharged sewage water from an overflowing chamber following a complaint lodged by a resident Savio Dias.
The inspection of the area near the Ring Road junction, Madel, has revealed overflow of sewerage from a manhole and release of waste water in the open, accumulation of dirty waste water and breeding site for mosquitoes, emitting foul smell.
The inspection at Madel had unearthed that waste sewerage water is released in the open drains and paddy fields.
The complainant who had knocked the doors of the Margao Urban Health Officer, District Collector, South, Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer and the Fatorda police station in-charge, has called upon the authorities to initiate further action against the PWD officials if they fail to comply with the directives.
“I had no option but to approach the authorities, including the health officer, since the PWD officials created the health hazard,”
Savio said.
While saying that the PWD might have some reasons to release the sewage from the overflowing chamber, Savio demanded to know why the department, which has a fleet of night soil tankers, did not deploy these to empty the chambers.
